Terminology
These phrases and terms will help you understand the rules of the game.
| Action: | A Fold, Check, Call, Bet or Raise |
| All-in: | When you have put all of your Table Stakes into the Pot during the course of a hand |
| Ante: | A predetermined contribution to the Pot by all players before any cards are dealt in a hand |
| Bet: | The act of placing a Wager in turn into the Pot on any Betting Round |
| Betting Round: | A complete cycle from the first person to Bet to the last person to Call |
| Blind: | A required Bet made before any cards are dealt. The Blind is a live Bet which can win the Pot if not Called or Raised |
| Buy-In: | The minimum amount of money required to enter any game |
| Call: | Placing a Bet equal to the highest legal Bet in that round or going All-in if remaining chips are less than the size of that Bet |
| Capped: | Describes the situation in Limit Poker in which the maximum number of raises in the Betting Round have been reached |
| Check: | Not initiating a Bet or surrendering a hand, but retaining all rights to act in the event a Bet is made. A Check shall only be an option if no Blind is placed or Bet is made |
| Check-Raise: | Initially checking in a Betting Round and then Raising a Bet that is subsequently made |
| Community Cards: | The cards dealt face-up in the centre of the table that can be used by all players to form their best hand in the games of Holdem and Omaha |
| Dealer button: | A flat disk that indicates the player who will receive cards last and determines where the action starts |
| Fixed Limit: | In Limit Poker, any betting structure in which the amount of the Bet on each particular round is pre-set |
| Flop: | In Holdem or Omaha, the three Community Cards are turned up simultaneously after the first round of betting is complete |
| Fold: | To throw a hand away and relinquish all interest in the Pot |
| Hole cards: | A players concealed cards |
| Kicker: | The highest unpaired card that helps determine the value of a five-card poker hand |
| Missed Blind: | A required Bet that is not posted when it’s your turn to do so |

| No-limit: | A Betting Structure where players are allowed to Wager any or their entire Table Stakes in one Bet. |
| Pot Limit: | The Betting Structure of a game in which you are allowed to Bet up to the amount of the Pot |
| Raise: | To increase the amount of a previous Wager |
| Rake: | The commission charged in a game |
| River Card: | The final Community Card dealt in Holdem or Omaha |
| Showdown: | The final act of determining the winner of the Pot after all the Betting has been completed |
| Side Pot: | A separate Pot formed when one or more players are All-in |
| String Raise: | A Bet made in more than one motion, without the declaration of a Raise (this is not allowed). |
| Table Stakes: | The amount of chips that you have on the table. This is the maximum amount you can Bet on or lose in any one hand |
| Tournament: | A poker competition, normally with an entry fee and prizes. |
| Turn Card: | The 4th Community Card in Holdem or Omaha Poker |
| Wager: | An action by which a player places gaming chips into the Pot on any Betting Round |
